The Secret Nabob
Published in Paperback by Signet (January, 1996)

Delightful!
This was the first regency romance I've ever read and it was delightful. It was beautifully written and left me with a really good feeling. I now know why these books are so popular, and I'm going to have to read more by Ms. Kirkland.

A great love story!
I have enjoyed many of this writer's works, but this one remains my favourite. When the shy heroine learns that she is in love with a man she should not love, I felt her heart-wrenching pain. Ms. Kirkland creates believable characters that will stay with you long after you have put the book down. Don't miss this one.

One of my favorites!
The Secret Nabob was one of my favorites of Martha Kirkland's works. A fun and energetic read and a delightful escape.

Garcia lorca doe it again
Whether you have children or not Buy this book. If you have children read them the landscape poetry in here. They will sing them in their sleep. It will take them on magical journeys to happy places and you also.

this is the one to buy
I just started browsing through a book of his poems in spanish one day and loved them, but my spanish is marginal. This has the spanish poems side by side with english translations, many of which I don't really like because they do things like switch words and lines and take a little too much freedom and change the spirit of the poem, but that's okay. You can read the spanish, read the english, and see exactly what has been changed, but the beauty is in the spanish ones, and though his vocabulary is large, yours doesn't really have to be to appreciate the sound and sight of these poems in spanish. I love many of the sonnets, plus the king of harlem, which reminds me of HCE from Finnegans Wake, this character that becomes the landscape itself, "after walking", and many others from the poet in new york. I've just been getting into some spanish poets after reading some st john of the cross and seeing what types of flows and life can be infused into words in this language, and these dark, bloody grimy oozes of language have had me high for weeks.

Great, One of the best collections of Lorca's poems
Brilliant, emotions of positive and negative are tasted in this work

Take a Tree Walk
Published in Paperback by Stillwater Publishing (June, 2002)
Authors: Jane Kirkland, Dorothy Burke, and Melanie Palaisa

Terrific Trees
I learned many different things about trees in this book. I can name all of the trees on my block by looking at their leaves. I liked that I got to finish the book by filling in the blank pages. Now when I ride my bike or ride in the car, I want to look up a tree that I don't know in my book when I get home. It's a great way to get research information for science.

Leaves, leaves, everywhere!
From roots to leaves, this book covers it all! Take A Tree Walk helps you understand different kinds of trees, how they grow, and even how their color changes. Everyone would love the fun to-do pages in the book, the silly tree riddles, and will love learning more about the trees in your own yard. This book is perfect for the whole family.

A Fabulous Gift Book!
My wife and I have given this book (and Kirkland's Take a Backyard Bird Walk) to several of the kids on our gift list. We can't think of a better way to encourage children to go outside and find their own adventures! Even better, we've learned so much about our own backyard birds and trees!

Live the adventure!
From the very start I felt I was right there with the characters. This is a terrific book with characters you really come to love. I was sad to reach the end.

What a wonderful book!
I stumbled across this book in the library one day. I usually don't read romances, but his one caught my eye because of the unusual story. Kirkland creates some wonderful characters for her readers as well as producing a realistic setting. I have read and re-read this book many times and am currently looking for a copy to put in my own personal library. If you're looking for a book to take your mind off your own troubles and give you a little historical information at the same time, check this one out

A Grateful Heart
Published in Hardcover by Baptist Sunday School Board - Baptist Book Stores (October, 1984)
Author: Margie Kirkland
Average review score:

Awesome book!
Like I said this is an awesome book!! I finally bought it after borrowing it from my church library for 2 months!! This is one book that will not collect dust in your book shelf. I keep it on my bed and flip through it whenever possible, and everything in it just makes you stop and think. It's full of really good poetry and prayers (meditations). One of these days my family should start using it before meals. It's a great idea to discuss it through the meal.

Wonderful antidote to rote prayer
We've all heard about the road to hell...
My own personal hell is canned grace and I vowed I would teach my kids to speak their thanks for the food before them from the heart. Nope, no rote prayers in our house.
Well it took about two weeks before they were lisping "Thank you for the food we're gonna eat," as fast as they could speak the words and in singsong just to make it worse.
Then enters The Grateful Heart. What a wonderful difference! The short, profound selections come from all over the world, from all faiths. We take turns, one reading per meal. Often the selection leads to discussions far more interesting than what used to be why we're having carrots or spinach AGAIN. And quite frequently, spontaneously, one of the children concludes the reading with the words "Thank you." Which is the point of grace to begin with.

The Honorable Thief (Signet Regency Romance)
Published in Paperback by Signet (December, 1996)
Author: Martha Kirkland
Average review score:

It Was Just One Of Those Days...
Honor's day had gone from bad to worse. It was one thing to be fired from one's post as a governess, sent from the house in shame, and made to walk to the nearest village (not nearly near enough) in deep snow. And all this because her employer's nephew assaulted HER! It was another thing to come across an unconscious man, lying amid a wrecked carriage, and, out of sheer desperation, steal enough money to hire a ride.

And now Honor, who was, of course, caught red handed by the world's most obnoxious postboy, must claim to be the unconscious gentleman's wife to avoid severe punishment.

But that is only the beginning. When the gentleman awakens and apparently believes Honor's ruse, Honor finds herself in the world's biggest tangle...especially when the gentleman unknowingly begins to steal his "wife's" heart.

Delightful and funny! Another gem by Martha Kirkland...don't miss it.

A book that will steal your heart
This was one of the first regency romances I ever read, and then I was hooked. The plot is Honoria Danforth has been dismissed from her postition as governess. She is walking to the villiage to catch a coach to London when she comes upon an overturned coach. The man inside is unconsious. Circumstances then force her to pose as the man's wife. Edmond Lawrence takes her to his newly inherited estate so that he won't be trapped into marrying the young lady at the estate. Needless to say things beome more complex as the story goes on. Not only are there delightfully likeable characters, there is humor, and some mystery and suspense as well. I highly recommend this book. It will be an enjoyable reading experience.

The Magnolia Tree
Published in Paperback by Jove Pubns (September, 1998)
Author: Martha Kirkland
Average review score:

A definite keeper!
Though this is more saga than romance, no one who picks up The Magnolia Tree will regret the decision. It kept me away all night; I could not put it down. Give it a try, you'll be glad you did.

Great historical novel
In 1855, Letty Banks desperately wants to leave the family plantation in order to escape from her abusive father. Instead, she stays put to protect her younger, frail half-sister, who is used as a blackmail pawn by her cruel dad. Visitors are a rarity. So Letty is excited when Yankee Thorn Bradley arrives with a message from her beloved grandfather. Still, she cannot leave because she cannot trust what her father will do to her sibling.

By the time the Civil War starts, Letty's father is dead and she goes by a different name. She saves Thorn's life as the Yankee spy is nearly caught by the Confederacy. The pair shares an intimate moment that leaves her pregnant. When a decade passes by, Letty is on trial and Thorn has come to save the woman he loves and meet his son for the first time.

THE MAGNOLIA TREE is not a historical romance by any stretch of the genre's boundaries. Instead, it is a brilliant Americana saga, starring an incredibly strong woman, who would! be a role model for anyone trying to survive life's worst blows. The secondary characters add depth and authenticity to a colorfully written story line, however, in the final analysis this novel is Martha Kirkland's tribute to the fortitude and strength of nineteenth century women who were stupendous survivors during one of the most calamitous periods in American History.

The Quiet Time Companion: A Daily Guide Through the Bible

Average review score:

This study guide is awesome!!
I just love this guide. I use it every day to start my day at work. It really gets me to meditate on God's wonderful word. It is so great, that I am buying it for a friend.

Kudos!
This book revolutionized my own Bible study time. The Quiet Time Companion uses several different approaches to freshen up personal study times. Weekly sessions may study a single passage, a character, or a word. Other sessions will look at the same passage from several different perspective or will spend two or more weeks on an indepth study of a section of scripture.

This multi-themed approach keeps your Bible study from becoming routine. You will not find a three month study of Leviticus. It cuts down on the theological/philosophic mumbo-jumbo giving straight but not dumbed down look at the Word of God.

Another innovative approach the authors used in creating this devotional aid is that the weekly sessions are composed of 5 lessons, giving you 2 days of individual study (the authors do make some suggestions) but this is an excellent opportunity to work in preparing your Sunday School lesson during the weekend personalized study.

The authors are to be commended! Bravo!
